San Po Kong Mansion, a #HongKong mega composite building that once integrated a single-hall 1,454-seat cinema & 540 residential flats, completed in 1967 (the year with leftist riots in Hong Kong & Cultural Revolution in China)

大廈右下方古怪的空置商場原為大型酒樓設計，酒樓背後更曾是一個有1,454個座位的大戲院(見第三張相片）。

過去一年鏡頭特別對香港五、六十年代商住綜合用途大廈建築有興趣，當時條例上開始打破四層唐樓、九層無電梯大廈為主的框框，各區紛紛建造着當時「最高」的綜合式商住大廈。前幾天偶然發現這一個動盪年代、動亂地區* 開業的「前」戲院建築。

皇都以外，其實當時亦有許多以戲院、商店和住宅合體的設計組合-- #新蒲崗大廈 1962-66年的建築入則圖便以”Theatre & Block of Flats “ 稱之。#鄭頌周 為工程師背景建築師。戲院部分設計以簡潔的長條形佈局，990座位的大廳低座加上464座位的上層樓座，配以梯級形普通水泥橫梁屋頂建造17米闊的無柱空間，結構實用至上。同層住宅和酒樓可見在聲學上與戲院有雙層分隔牆或以室外空隙隔聲，住宅共有540個單位，長形地盤的單位佈局能一字排開，地盤四面環街，不致於如過千單位的新都城、海山樓等，單位要向內庭「互望」。

承建商老闆並製片人 #盧林 為當時 #英華戲院 的院主。戲院1967年開業時播放「快樂年華」。八九十年代改名為 #麗斯戲院 ，2005年8月8日結業。2008年改則圖可見戲院樓座已拆掉，改為普通平面的樓板，加開窗戶後成為老人院，區内看戲的快樂年華不再。

Before you bash me, hear me out. My intention is not to accuse. If I wanted to pick a fight, I’d be a politician— not a teacher.

So be kind as you read this.

When I came to Hong Kong 13 years ago, I remember speaking to a local friend. I said, “I am glad that people like you are not racist towards Filipinos like me.”

That person said, “Haha! It’s okay! Many of us like Filipinos. It’s those Indians and Pakistanis we don’t like.”

I heard this kind of statement for many years, and I eventually had the courage to call people out on it. Racism is racism, no matter who the target is. And it hurts everyone— not just the people they talk about.

The recent comments about our South Asian sisters and brothers are hurtful. It is irresponsible, for anyone in a position of influence, to overgeneralise characteristics and impose these beliefs on any group of people, particularly those in the minority.

For many, this seems harmless— “It was a careless statement that wasn’t intended to cause damage.”

But it does. I recently saw a video of a local child who was interviewed after a cultural exchange experience. She said, “I didn’t realise that South Asian people are so nice. I thought they were dirty and criminals, but they are actually good.”

It is in subtle conversations where we reinforce social stereotypes. However, it is in our conscious daily conversations where we have the power to break it.

I am encouraging you now to make that positive choice. Acknowledge racial insensitivity where it is— let’s even look inside ourselves to see where we can be better. (Even I need a lot of this.)

Then, let’s say, “the hate stops there. From hereon, the change comes from me.”

Academic freedom and freedom of speech are among the important #sharedvalues that bind together the United States and Taiwan as friends and partners. The situation in Hong Kong highlights just how precious those freedoms are. Please join us as we celebrate intellectual freedom in a two-part program entitled “Reading for Freedom:”

Part 1: "Ten Years" film screening and post-screening discussion. Lin Fei-fan, Deputy Secretary-General of the DPP, & Prof. Zhang Guo-cheng will join with us.

Part 2: Discussion of Hong Kong’s history of free speech. The panel will include Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay bookstore owner Lam Wing-Kee and well-known lyricist Albert Leung (Lin Xi), along with representatives from Taiwan’s creative and cultural industries, including Jou Yi-cheng, Founder and CEO of Sedai Group, and Dr. Ming Chu-cheng, Honorary Professor, Department of Political Science, National Taiwan University.

Perched on the hillside in the west of Hong Kong Island is the 200-year-old Pokfulam Village, home to the city’s first dairy farm. As one of the cultural heritage sites at risk listed in the 2014 World Monuments Watch, the village was first mentioned in the Xinan County Journal during the Kangxi period in 1819. Today, it is still famed for its Fire Dragon Dance held every Mid-Autumn Festival, with its incense-lit dragons believed to have driven away a plague over a century ago.

Nigel Ko, member of the Pokfulam Village Cultural Landscape Conservation Group, says the shabby tin-roofed huts are home to numerous stories of community and kindness, but the true history of the village remains a mystery after all these years.

An exhibition of 26 exciting emerging artists in Kent

The University of Kent’s School of Music and Fine Art presents the Fine Art Degree Show 2016 in the extraordinary environment of The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent, featuring the work of 26 graduating BA and MA Fine Art students.

Opening with a preview on Saturday May 21st, 1pm-5pm,
with guest speaker, Patricia Bickers, writer, curator and editor of Art Monthly
and music from artist Benedict Drew.

The exhibition is open to all and is free to attend.

Open to the public (10am-5pm):
Sunday 22nd May
Tuesday 24th May - Tuesday 31st May inclusive.

Continuing a tradition of showcasing bold, exploratory exhibitions curated by the University of Kent’s Fine Art students, framed by the stunning backdrop of one of the country’s most iconic locations, the Historic Dockyard Chatham, our visitors will encounter a broad range of artistic styles and media, an explosion of imagination and a celebration of art’s potential for society.

This exhibition offers the public a fascinating insight into contemporary art’s most recent practices and processes such as a ‘Grand Design’ home evolved by a hoarder, an oozing conversation with the earth, a system of tunnels, angry letters about Gillingham’s Samurai sent to Medway council, a Dockyard worker’s fall down a well as sculpture, personal Facebook data becomes food, a dream-like exploration of the car industry, hand movements translated into Fibonacci sound, an autobiographical feature length film made on a mobile phone and a performance where the rules of tennis are applied to an exam.

The Degree Show’s aim is to encourage audiences to explore the potential of Medway as a dynamic hub for art, with the School of Music and Fine Art as a major conduit for these activities, positively impacting on the community and offering imaginative suggestions and visionary strategies for cultural regeneration.

As well as involving students from Kent, and across the UK, this year’s Degree Show exhibitors include student artists from Iran, Thailand, China, Russia, Italy, Cyprus, Mexico, Hong Kong, Isle of Man and Ghana.

The Fine Art Degree Show exhibition catalogue features texts by academics across a range of University of Kent Schools: Emily Rosamond, Grant Pooke, Simon Smith, Howard Griffin and Rebecca Hobbs.
Degree Show visitors can attend a wide range of exciting educational activities. Young people attending can also participate in workshops with some of the exhibiting artists. On Tuesday 24h May and Wednesday 25th May Education Days will be held for local schools and colleges. Attendees will be able to view the Show and hear talks from the artists; they will also be encouraged to produce their own artwork in response to their experience of the Show. Visitors to the Degree Show will also be able to visit the Historic Dockyard's thematic exhibition of international contemporary art works, "Of the Sea," a competition (in collaboration with the School of Music and Fine Art) whose jury panel includes Kathleen Palmer (Head of Art, Imperial War Museum), and Victoria Pomery (Director of Turner Contemporary, Margate).

The School of Music and Fine Art was rated within the top ten of Art university departments in the UK (Guardian League Tables, 2015) an accolade supported by a top 20 University which came 3rd for ‘overall satisfaction’ in the National Student Survey, 2014

All members of the Fine Art academic staff are actively engaged as nationally and internationally exhibiting artists and published writers and include Shona Illingworth, Sarah Turner, Dr Andrew Conio, Emily Rosamund, Adam Chodzko, Tim Meacham and Dr Steve Klee.

We have links with many leading arts organisations including; Whitstable Biennale and Turner Contemporary, Margate. We actively engage with collaborations and participation with our local community in Medway.

The department attracts students from all over the world and from a diverse range of backgrounds and experience.
